Paris Aims to Boost the Image of Tap Water and Reduce Waste

On December 16, 2010, I received a direct message from a twitter follower about sparkling water in Paris. As I proceeded to read the article, I was so impressed to see a child filling a bottle water container with sparking water from a public water fountain. I thought that was .....State of the Art Eco-Friendly Living!

According to Earth Policy Institute, French are the world's eight biggest consumer of bottle water. In fact, Paris generated over 262,000 tons of plastic waste a year and making the bottles consumed over 4.5 million barrels of crude oil.

Parisians can now get sparkling water from their public water fountains, free of charge. The new public fountains were installed by local authorities, which aims to wean consumers of bottled water. ~Vicky Buffery/Reuters

The publicly owned water company, Eau de Paris reports that the water fountains injects carbon dioxide into drinking water to make it bubbly and chills the water before delivering it to the consumer. Phillip Burguiere, a spokes person for Eau de Paris Company said, "Our aim is to boost the image of Paris tap water. Moreover, we want to show that we're proud of it, that it's totally safe, and that it's ecological as there's no oil involved, no waste and no packaging."

In America we currently do not have water fountains that deliver sparkling water, but there are ways that we can also reduce waste from bottle water including:
  • Buy water filters for our home or business faucets
  • Buy Gallons of Spring water and drink water from a re-usable mug or cup
How do you think that we can reduce plastic waste and/or boost the image of tap water in the United States?

Stress is America's #1 Health Problem,
According to the American Institute of Stress.

Dr. Sharon Fitelson, a Chiropractic Orthopedic and Acupuncturist of InMotion Health Center, discussed the negative effects that Stress has on the body on a December 6, 2010 Live Health, Wellness and Prevention Plus Conference CALL.

On the call, Dr. Fitelson said, "If you are under way to much stress you will need caffeine in the morning, have difficulty sleeping at night and may fall to sleep after lunch." Moreover, if your cortisol levels are too high it will draw protein out of your joints and calcium from your bones.

This is just a small list of ways that stress will effect your body and it is vital that you develop a stress management plan. Furthermore, that it is vital to your Health & Wellness that you relax more and stress less!

Multi-Vitamins or Whole Food Supplements?

"You might as well stand unprotected in front of an X-ray machine as to not eat enough fruits and vegetables." — Dr. Bruce Ames, Winner of the National Medal of Science

Do you take multi-vitamins or a whole food supplement? According to Dr. Don Colbert's Book, Seven Pillars of Health,  multi-vitamins simply do not provide us with the  powerful plant pigment that we get from phytonutrients in whole food supplements.

Plant pigments in whole food supplements help to prevent heart disease and cancer. Dr. Colbert also wrote, " Unfortunately, most of us, as well as our children, are also falling way short of the USDA- recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day and we fall prey to disease as a result of the shortage.

Dr. Colbert also recommends that we take a whole food supplement that contains phytonutrient powder from a combination of colorful organic fruits and vegetables such as: red, yellow, green, orange and purple for your protection every day.

Are you wondering where to get a whole food supplement? Have you heard of Juice Plus? Juice plus is a researched based whole food nutrition that is recommended by Doctors all over the world and researched by Universities all over the world.  Moreover, over 500,000 children all over the world are taking Juice Plus and participating in the Juice Plus Children's Health Study.

Garden Therapy For The Soul

Garden Therapy for the Soul

Garden Therapy have been used throughout history to aid in the healing process according to the St. Louis Yoga & Spa Magazine article tiltled, Tranquil Garden Spas. As one sits and enjoys the beauty of nature, there is an escape to serenity. Moreover, enjoying the beauty of nature, listening to the sound of birds chirping, makes life seem so much more peaceful and enjoyable.

Roger Ulrich, a professor and director of the Center for Health Systems and Design at Texas A & M University, discovered that viewing natural scenes or elements fosters stress recovery by evoking positive feelings, reducing negative emotions, holding attention and reducing stressful thoughts.

Gay Goeslling, a trained Landscape Architect, Environmental Artist and Healing Garden Specialist says, "There is a need to reconnect with the natural world, an anchor that will let us bring more ephemeral discoveries back into our lives." Gay's sculptures and healing gardens are microcosms of the natural world.

The next time that you need to relax and get away from the stress of life, try some garden therapy and reconnect with the natural world!

Natural Remedies for Headaches

Thousands of children and adults are afflicted with this headache "thing" and headaches are the most common reason people seek chiropractic care, according to Dr. Paul B. Hyland a Chiropractor living in St. Louis, Missouri.

On Dr. Hyland's Committed to Health Chiropractic website Newsletter, he defines the word headache as an ache in the head, not a disease. Headaches are simply your body "talking back to you" and it is a sign that your body produces to let you know that it is having difficult time handling something.

Get Relief for Headaches

According to an October 5, 2010 MedBroadcast health feature article written byAmy Toffelmire, there are natural ways to head off headache pain including: exercise, relaxing, compress, rub, unclench, eat and drink more water.

1. Exercise- When you excercise, your body releases a natural painkiller called endorphins. Endorphins ease an aching head by boosting the mood and reducing the sensation of pain.

2. Relax- Taking a 20 minute break in a quiet place is a great way to relieve tension and to get some rest and relaxation. Try some relaxation music.

3. Compress-Head ache pain that is caused by muscle tension may respond well to a hot or cold compress. The compress will help relax the tension in the muscles.

4. Rub- Using your fingers to massage your temples, scalp, neck and shoulders relieves muscle pain. Also, try lightly squeezing and rubbing the outer edge of your ear between your thumb and index finger.

5. Un-clench-Clinching your teeth puts pressure on the muscles around the jaw, which could lead to a headache. If you think that too much clenching is causing headaches, take a break from chewing on hard food such as: nuts, candy, tough meat and chewing gum.

6. Avoid foods that seem to prompt your headaches such as food or drinks that contain; MSG, caffeine, alchohol and artificial sweetners. Avoid skipping meals, because this contributes to fluctating blood sugars.

7. Drink-Drink plenty of water daily, because dehydration is known to cause headaches.

Dietary Changes to help reduce headaches

As indicated in Amy's article, you must avoid foods that prompt headaches. In the book, Natural Health Remedies, Dr. Janet Macarro, recommended some dietary considerations such as: eating turkey to boost serotonin levels in the brain, add dark leafy greens and brocolli to the diet, eat more pinapple and cherries. Also, a cup of black coffee can help relieve a headache once it has begun.

Is Flouride Healthy For You?

Most cities in the United States add flouride to the water, even though flouride is a proven toxin, says Dr. Don Colbert in the Book Seven Pillars of Health. Dr. Colbert also wrote: " Flouride helps to prevent tooth decay, primarily in children, but it also partially inhibits a hundred different enzymes in the body.

Moreover, Flouride can interfere with vitamin and mineral functions; it is also linked to calcium deposits and arthritis. According to the U.S. Department of health and Human services, people with cardiovascular and kidney problems, the elderly, people with calcium, magnesium and vitamin deficiencies are susceptible to the toxic effects of flouride.

This blog post is intended to educate you on the dangers of flouride. If you choose to use toothpaste that contains flouride, make sure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly and do not swallow your toothpaste.

Here’s a Quick Way to Reduce Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol Myths – both Good and Bad

Most people think that cholesterol is always bad, but there are actually two types of cholesterol. LDL is considered the "bad" cholesterol, and HDL is considered the "good" cholesterol. If there is too much LDL in our bloodstream, it will form plaque on our arteries. Over time, this narrows our arteries and can eventually block blood flow completely. Dietary cholesterol actually isn't the primary reason for high cholesterol in the blood; it is high amounts of saturated fat and trans fat. To keep cholesterol low, you should eat unsaturated fats, eat fibrous foods, and exercise more.

Cholesterol Numbers and What They Mean

Every adult should have their cholesterol checked at least every 5 years. When you get a cholesterol test, you'll usually get back four different results. Here are the 4 categories and the healthy range you want to be in.

Total Cholesterol - less than 200 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/L)

LDL Cholesterol - less than 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L)

HDL Cholesterol - greater than 40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L)

Triglycerides - less than 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)

If you are over or under the desired level on any category, it is usually indicative that a diet or exercise change is needed.

Protecting Your Heart with Vitamin E

You can find Vitamin E in many nuts, leafy vegetables and vegetable oils. While it cannot prevent a stroke, Vitamin E can still reduce your risk for heart disease.

Five Great Foods to Lower Your Cholesterol

1. Oatmeal and Oat Bran: These contain a high amount of soluble fiber, which can lower LDL.

2. Fish: Fish is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, which lowers LDL and raises HDL.

3. Nuts: Not only are nuts high in fiber, but they contain the healthy fats you need to keep LDL in check.

4. Plant Sterols: This is found in foods like margarine, salad dressing, orange juice, and functional cookies. 2 grams per day will lower your LDL by 10-15%.

5. Soy: This popular meat replacement can lower LDL by up to 3%.

 Benefits Aplenty with Plant Sterols

Plant sterols can be found in foods such as Benecol Spread, granola bars, Vita Tops Muffin Tops and fat free milk. To help your heart, you should eat a lot of plant sterols-packed food and stop eating foods with saturated fat. You should know that this does not balance out a diet rich in saturated fats. To be in control of your cholesterol, you should still eat healthy and exercise often.

Keep the Bugs Away the Natural Way

The mosquito population increases during the summer time along with the use of insect repellants. When we chose to use eco friendly insect repellants, we chose to sustain the environment.

In the article, Outdoor Eco-Tips for Summer, Katie Sorenson recommends that we use an eco- friendly repellant candle that does not contain citronella (which may irritate skin and cause dermatitis). "If you are planning on using citronella candles outside, look for organic made candles. Many candle companies will have organically made options, says Sorenson."

Sorenson suggests the use of lemon grass as a natural mosquito repellant. Lemon Grass can be purchased from your local garden store or planted in your yard. When you rub the stalk of the lemon Grass on your skin, it will keep the bugs from biting you the Natural Way!

Spices That will Naturally Cut Your Risk of Cancer and Spice up your Barbecued Meat!

Researchers at Kansas State University report that adding certain spices such as: rosemary, fingerroot and tumeric to your meat (especially beef)  before grilling will cut your risk of developing cancer. These spices are sold in an extract form that have demonstrated HCA inhibition of 61 percent to 79 percent, according to Health Day.

Moreover, Health Day reports that "Cooked beef tends to develop more HCAs than other kinds of cooked meats such as pork and chicken," KSU food chemistry professor J. Scott Smith noted in a news release. "Cooked beef patties appear to be the cooked meat with the highest mutagenic activity and may be the most important source of HCAs in the human diet."

Eat More Strawberries To Protect the Cell Structure in the Body

Eating More Strawberries is a Natural Way to protect cell structures in the body and to prevent oxygen damage in all of the body's organ systems. Moreover, strawberries contain phenolic phytonutrients, which serve as potent antioxidants and a heart-protective fruit, but an anti-inflammatory one as well.

Strawberry's phenols block the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase (or COX), whose over-activity has been shown to contribute to unwanted inflammation, such as that involved in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, and cancer, according to the World's Healthiest Foods Weekly Newsletter.

George Mateljan of World's Healthiest foods, believes that it is healthier to purchase organically grown produce. Organically grown produce is free of pesticides, which is an insect repellant that is sprayed on produce while it is grown on the farm. Trader Joes is an affordable place to buy organically grown strawberries. In fact, I have purchased Organic strawberries for as low as $2.99 a pack at Trader Joes.

Along with eating strawberries, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is a sure way to help the body fight illnesses such as: cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. In fact, the USDA and health professionals are  recommending a daily intake of 7-13 fruits and vegetables a day. It almost seems nearly impossible and could be expensive to consume that many fruits and vegetables day.

Taking a daily whole food supplement is the next best way to assure that your body gets the recommended amount of phytonutrients. For more information and on the importance of adding a whole food supplment to your diet and research information, visit my Juice Plus+ site.

5 Natural Ways to reduce your chances of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among females.~ CDC

In the Book, The World's Greatest Treasures of Health Secrets, Dr. Adriane Fugh-Berman of Georgetown School of medicine listed four ways for women to reduce their risk of breast cancer and they are as follows: Eat more soy foods, Eat cruciferous vegetables, Avoid pesticides, Eat a low fat diet and Exercise.

1.) Eat more soy foods such as; Tofu and soy milk. Soy foods contain a plant estrogen called phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens inhibit th ebody's own production of estrogen which may provide the fuel for breast cancer growth.  **Soy Oil or Soy sauce contains phytoestrogens.

3.) Consider eating organic produce. Organic produce is free of pesticides (which contain estrogen-like compounds.) Be sure to peel or wash all fruits and vegetables thouroughly.

4.) Be sure that less than 20% of your calories are from fat.

5.) Women who exercise aerobically for more than 3 hours aweek have a lower risk  of developing breast cancer.

There are also other preventive measures and they include; breast exams and annual well woman physicals. For questions regarding breast health contact your Physician or check out the Centers for disease control Breast Health Newsletter: http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/breast/pdf/cdc_breast_health_fact_sheet.pdf.

3 Gentle Ways to Detox Your Body

" Detixification is any process that helps to decrease toxins and increase Nutrition."~Elson Haas, MD

According to Dr. Elson Haas, Director of Preventive Medical Center of Marin in SanRafael, California and the Author of the New Detox Diet, " Detox happens anytime you eat wholesome food, avoid junk and chemicals."

In the Article, Gentle DeTox, Pamela Emanoil Bond, lists gentle ways to detox the body and they are as follows:

  1. Eliminate sugar, wheat, dairy, caffeine and alcohol during the detoxification process. A high sugar, high fat diet makes toxins stay in the blood stream longer, according to Walter Crinnion, ND.

  2. Eat more fresh fruits and dark leafy greens such as; spinach and kale. Also, eat more brocolli, cabbage and brussel sprouts.

  3. A 2007 study found that drinking at least 3 cups of green tea a day helps to rid the body of cancer-causing toxins.
When you begin to incorporate these three strategies into your diet, you will minimize your body's exposure to toxins and support your liver (your primary cleansing organ).

" Cleansing Herbs to Detoxify and Tone your Body and Skin"

I tried herbal body wrap about three months ago and I was was glad that I did! After soaking in a Herbal Bath I was sooooo relaxed and it was definately an invigorating experience. I now have an Herbal Bath evening once a month to meditate, relax and enjoy the aroma of the herbal bath. Most of all, to cleanse, detoxify and tone my body and skin.

Why Detoxify?

Your skin is the body's largest organ and it is extremely absorbent. Everyday we ingest, inhale and indulge toxins such as (air pollution, processed foods, medication, toxic skin lotions, etc.) According to Life Force International, "The body's natural response is to protect the internal organs by trapping the toxins and storing them close to the surface of the skin, cushioned in water and fat cells, to be released through the pores. As a result, the toxins and extra water in our fat cells increase the appearance of dimpling, inches and poor skin tone."

Why Herbal Body Wrap?

Herbal Body wrap contains 27 minerals and herbs including Aloe Vera, which is known for its skin beautifying properties. In fact, Aloe Vera is scientifically proven to benefit skin.  Moreover, Herbal Body wrap eliminates surface impurities, resulting in toning of the skin. Herbal body wrap has been used for decades by many people all over the world.

Try it as a Wrap
